Paper Rooms A private library

Terms of Service

Last updated · 2026-06-16

Paper Rooms is a free, local-first reading app with no accounts and no servers. There isn’t much to agree to — but here are the terms, in plain language.

1. What Paper Rooms is

Paper Rooms is an application that resolves links to research papers and renders them for reading, and that keeps your saved papers, highlights, and notes on your own device. It has no accounts, no sign-in, and no backend server that we operate. By using the app, you agree to these terms.

2. It’s free

Paper Rooms is provided free of charge, with no subscription, no in-app purchases, and no advertising. We don’t promise it will always be available, maintained, or free forever — but there is nothing for you to buy, now or later.

3. Your content is yours

Anything you create in the app — saved papers, highlights, notes, collections — belongs to you and is stored on your device. We have no access to it. You are responsible for your own backups; if you delete the app or lose your device without a backup, that data may be gone, and we cannot recover it for you.

4. Papers and third-party sources

When you open a paper, the app fetches it directly from the source you requested (for example arxiv.org). Those papers and sources are owned by their respective authors and publishers and are subject to their own licenses and terms. Paper Rooms does not own, host, or claim any rights to the papers you read. With thanks to arXiv for its open-access interoperability.

5. Acceptable use

Use Paper Rooms lawfully. Don’t use it to infringe others’ rights, to circumvent paywalls or access controls you aren’t entitled to bypass, or to violate the terms of the sources you fetch from. Don’t attempt to misuse the app to harm others or their systems.

6. No warranty

Paper Rooms is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. Resolution and rendering depend on third-party sources that can change or fail; we don’t guarantee that any given paper will resolve, render completely, or render correctly.

7. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Paper Rooms and its maker are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the app. Since the app is free and stores your data only on your device, our role in your data is intentionally minimal.

8. Changes

These terms may change as the app evolves. The current version will always be posted here with a new date. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
